Tour of Britain to Race through the Blackdowns

( Last Updated: 11-05-2010 )

Once more the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is gearing up to welcome the Tour of Britain, Britain's premier cycle race, and not just for one stage, but for both of the South West stages!

The Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which straddles the Somerset-Devon border, rising from the Vale of Taunton up onto the East Devon plateau at around 300 metres, will provide challenging terrain and a striking backdrop for this prestigious race on 14th and 15th September 2010.

At around lunchtime on both days, the Tour will pass through the Blackdown Hills AONB. On the Tuesday the route passes through the villages of Hemyock, Dunkeswell and Awliscombe, and on the Wednesday the cyclists will race into Hemyock once again, this time from the west through Culmstock. They will then face a steep 1 in 5 climb, a sprint along the straight, fast ridge road, then down through the pretty village of Staple Fitzpaine and away to the finish at Glastonbury.

Linda Bennett, Blackdown Hills AONB Manager, said: "The Blackdown Hills are a fabulous area for cycling, whether racing, touring, training or simply exploring the hidden valleys and villages. We are delighted that the Tour is coming through the area, not least because it will give the Blackdown Hills its due recognition as a top location for cycling in the South West."

"On the lead up to the race we will be encouraging our local communities to celebrate and support the Tour, and to get on their bikes as well!  We will also be working with the host authorities, Somerset and Devon County Councils, to ensure every success for the Blackdown Hills' sections of the race."
