Explore the night sky at Chardstock stargazing event

( Last Updated: 20-10-2010 )

An event in Chardstock in South Somerset next week will explore the night sky over the Blackdown Hills. The area was named earlier this year along with Exmoor National Park as one of the UK's top stargazing locations.

Local astronomer Simon Ould will welcome attendees into the South West's largest mobile planetarium to glimpse the glories of the universe, before leading the group outside for a guided tour of the night sky with telescopes.

The evening, which has been organised by the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team, will focus on the quality of the darkness. It is hoped that astronomy events such as this will inspire local people to get involved in protecting the AONB's natural, starry skies.

'Stargazing in the Blackdown Hills' takes place on Friday 29 October, 7pm - 9pm at Chardstock Village Hall. The cost is £7.50 per adult and £5 per child. Places are limited and booking is essential. More information

The event will be repeated in Hemyock in Mid Devon on 26 February 2011.
