Digital Mentoring comes to the Hills

( Last Updated: 21-09-2009 )

COSMIC, a Social Enterprise based in Ottery St Mary has recently won funding to deliver ‘Digital Mentoring' to individuals, organisations and businesses within the Blackdown Hills and East Devon Areas.

Under the  new ‘Making it Local' scheme, COSMIC will provide Information and Communication Technology (ICT) support and mentoring to help improve local economic activity through better use of ICT, and set up new and innovative links between the area's large rural areas and market towns. Through the development of these strong local connections, the project aims to help the communities and businesses to be more resilient and sustainable.

Julie Harris Chief Executive at COSMIC explains ‘We have an opportunity during the current recession to take a good look at how ICT can help people and their organisations to become better at what they do and to use technology in ways which will prove truly valuable for the future. This is a pilot project which we hope will be replicated in other areas, and will provide an excellent lift for local businesses and groups to see them through the current situation."

Amongst the project's many aims, the digital mentors will help humanise technology. Mentors will provide outreach, flexible and responsive support, encouraging people to consider ICT's potential to improve economic, social and environmental performance, e.g. reducing environmental impact, providing new and flexible employment options and allowing greater cooperation and collaboration for businesses, communities and individuals.

COSMIC'S Andy Thompson and Tim Evans will be delivering the program as Digital Mentors. Andy who has been an IT teacher at COSMIC for over 5 years says:

‘I will be able to bring my IT skills, enthusiasm and knowledge to delivering IT training sessions to your business, organisation or on a 1-2-1 basis if needed. Could you or your organisation use an improved web presence? Are you on ‘Facebook' or ‘Twitter' yet? Have you turned down making a website for your business or organisation due to cost?  The new Digital Mentors can work with you to establish best use of ICT.'

COSMIC is looking for individuals, organisations and businesses within the AONBs who would like to benefit from the support that this project offers.

Information, including forthcoming sessions and workshops can be found at

Andy and Tim can be contacted through the website or alternatively T.01404 813226 or
