( Last Updated: 01-12-2009 )

Entries are now being sought for the 2009/10 Devon and Exmoor Hedge Competition, which is being run by the Devon Hedge Group in partnership with the Devon Farming and Wildlife Trust Group, the Exmoor Trust and Exmoor National Park Authority. The purpose of this annual event is to highlight and reward examples of good practice in the management of Devon's hedges.

This year's competition has two categories:
Best Laid Hedge in Devon
Best Laid Exmoor Hedge

Entrants are asked to fill in a very simple form and supply a photographic record of the work. Following an initial sift of entries, a number of short-list entrants receive a visit to assess the quality of their work. Prizes of £200, £100 and £50 are awared to the winning entires in each category, with an additional bonus prize available in the Devon-wide cateogy for the person who demonstrates the best establishment or retention of hedgerow trees.

All entries have to be submitted via Devon FWAG by 31st March 2010. If any of you become aware of good hedgelaying work being undertaken in Devon or in Exmoor (either side of the border) over the winter, please encourage either the land owner or the contractor to consider entering the competition. The application form can be found at: www.devon.gov.uk/hedge_competition
