A community shop in an East Devon village has proved it can beat the big supermarkets when it comes to waste.
Payhembury Provisions has achieved a wastage rate of just 1.4%, compared with a national average of 6-8% for supermarkets. The feat has been achieved thanks to a new till system purchased with a grant from the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership.
The grant of £4,732, which came from the AONB's Sustainable Development Fund, enabled the team running the shop to purchase an EPOS till system. The system monitors stock levels and ordering requirements very precisely, enabling the shop to meet demand and support local farmers without wasting produce.
Payhembury Provisions opened its doors for trade in July last year. The shop, which is owned and run by community shareholders, sells general groceries, fresh produce, newspapers and alcohol.
The shop has a strong ethos of caring for the local environment through sourcing local produce, reducing food miles, reducing car miles and minimising waste. The shop’s wastage should lower even further as local buying trends are established and effectively monitored via the EPOS technology.
