Ancient tales from the Blackdowns to be woven into new book

( Last Updated: 04-01-2012 )

Local people are being asked remember folklore, legends and real-life stories for a new book of tales from the Blackdown Hills.

Storyteller Clare Viner is hunting for material to weave into a set of enchanting stories set in both the Blackdown and Quantock Hills. She wants to hear from anyone who may have something to add.

Clare has been gathering local stories for several years already and telling them at popular events across the Blackdown Hills. Her idea is to capture all these stories and more, and make them available to new generations in an attractive book.

"I'd love to hear from anyone who can tell me a tale from the Blackdowns, whether it's a complete story or a fragment, or even just an interesting saying. It could me an ancient myth, or it might be something remembered from more recently which I could work in to the book. It could be magical or down-to-earth, funny or serious, long or short. I'm looking forwarding to hearing them all!"
The book will include a map, to enable readers to visit the places where the stories were born, and enjoy them in their orignal setting as well as at home. When the book is complete, it will be available from local bookshops and other outlets. The project has been supported by the Blackdown Hills and Quantock Hills AONB teams through their Sustainable Development Funds.
